HOW IT WORKS

From Inquiry to Delivery

CHALLENGES

Challenges This Service Solves

Delamination

The overmold peels away because the pair is incompatible or the interface cooled before the second shot landed. Symptom: a clean separation at the bond line under peel testing.

Flash

Thin TPE bleed at the parting line from mold temperature drift or worn shut-off. Adds deflashing labor and can cut seals and grips.

Sink marks

Thick overmold sections over unsupported substrate walls shrink visibly after cooling — a cosmetic reject on visible soft-touch surfaces.

Misregistration

The soft zone drifts off the substrate so the grip or seal misses its target — typical of loosely located second-shot tooling.

FAQ

Overmolding Service — FAQ

Can you help with product development?

Yes. From design review and material selection to prototyping, tooling and mass production — our engineers support you through the entire product lifecycle.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide via air and sea freight, with export packing, documentation and delivery tracking handled by our team.

What quality inspections do you perform?

First article inspection, dimensional measurement, material verification and surface checks — with inspection reports provided per batch. Full details are agreed before production.

What is the difference between rapid and production tooling?

Rapid tooling uses softer materials and simplified construction for fast, low-cost validation runs (hundreds to low thousands of parts). Production tooling uses hardened steel for high-volume, long-life programs.

How long does injection mold making take?

Rapid tooling prototypes can be ready in days; production tooling typically takes several weeks depending on complexity, cavity count and steel grade. We confirm a detailed schedule with your quotation.

Do you provide DFM feedback?

Yes. Every quotation includes a design-for-manufacturing review: draft angles, wall thickness, gate and weld-line locations, tolerance recommendations and cost-saving suggestions — before any tooling is cut.

What file formats do you accept?

We accept STEP, IGES, STL, X_T and 2D drawings (PDF or DWG). A 3D model lets us quote most accurately; 2D drawings are used to confirm critical tolerances and specifications.

How do I get a quote?

Upload your 3D file (STEP, IGES, STL or X_T) through the quote page, or email it directly. Our engineers review the design, run a DFM check and send you a detailed quotation — usually within one business day.

How the Overmold Bonds to the Substrate

A good overmold bond is engineered at four levels — we control all of them in-house.

Chemical adhesion

Compatible pairs (TPE over PP, TPU over ABS/PC) form a genuine melt bond at the interface. We run material-pair testing — 300+ pairs in our lab reference set — before tooling so the pair is proven, not assumed.

  • Compatibility lab testing
  • Documented process window
  • FDA / ISO 10993 grades

Mechanical interlock

Undercuts, through-holes, ribs and molded texture give the overmold something to grip. Interlock is the safety net that keeps the bond structural even where chemical adhesion is limited.

  • Undercut & hole design
  • Textured bonding zones
  • Pull-off testing

Interface temperature control

The substrate surface must stay above its softening point when the second shot lands. Mold temperature control of ±0.5 °C keeps the interface consistent — the difference between a bond and a delamination.

  • ±0.5 °C mold temp control
  • Pre-heat scheduling
  • Real-time pressure monitoring

Registered positioning

The overmold must land exactly on the substrate every cycle. Our tooling registers substrate-to-cavity positioning within 0.02 mm, so the soft zone sits where the drawing says.

  • <0.02 mm registration
  • Automated cells
  • First-article verification
