Every plastic injection molding company can show you a clean factory and a list of machines. The difference between a commodity molder and a partner shows up in what they ask before they quote, how they handle the DFM, and whether the quality system actually covers the parts you need — medical, automotive or consumer. Capabilities Buyers Should Actually Probe
Machine count tells you almost nothing. Probe these instead. First, mold making in-house: who corrects the shrinkage, moves a gate or repairs a worn cavity — and how fast? A supplier without a mold shop is a middleman with a machine; a 3-day in-house correction becomes a 3-week vendor negotiation. Second, process control: are the machines closed-loop with shot monitoring, or set-and-pray? Closed-loop Sodick controls hold packing pressure within ±1%, which is the difference between Cpk 1.67 and a quality fight. Third, the material range: a serious molder runs commodity resins and engineering grades — ABS, PP, PC, nylon, PBT, PPS, PEEK, TPU, LSR. Ask which high-temperature materials they actually run, not which they list.
Fourth, inspection: does the company have a CMM, and do parts ship with inspection reports, or is QC a caliper on the shipping table? Fifth, certifications with teeth: IATF 16949 for automotive, ISO 13485 for medical, ISO 9001 as the baseline. Sixth, the secondary operations: insert molding, overmolding, two-shot, ultrasonic welding, printing and plating — a supplier that does these in-house removes handoffs and tolerance stacks.
What a Real Factory Quote Looks Like
A serious quote includes the DFM findings, the tooling plan (steel grade, cavity count, hot runner), the cycle time estimate, the per-part price at your volume, the inspection plan and the lead time. If a quote has no DFM comments and no cavity plan, it is a number, not a quote. Ask for case studies in your category, visit the reference customer if you can, and check that the quality system certification matches your requirement (ISO 13485 for medical, IATF 16949 for automotive).
