Rapid tooling exists because product teams run out of time before they run out of budget. A conventional hardened steel mold takes 6-10 weeks and a meaningful investment; rapid tooling — aluminum or soft-steel molds, machined directly from CAD with no EDM delays — delivers molded parts in days or a few weeks, with real production materials and real process conditions. The parts are not prototypes printed in resin; they are molded in ABS, PP, nylon or PC on a production machine.

Aluminum vs Steel: When Rapid Tooling Is the Right Call
Aluminum cavities are the workhorse of rapid tooling. They machine fast, they transfer heat quickly (which shortens cycle time), and they cost a fraction of hardened steel. The limits: aluminum tooling is rated for tens of thousands of shots at best, it cannot survive aggressive glass-filled resins at high mold temperatures for long, and it wears at the gate and parting line first. The right use cases are functional prototypes, pilot runs of 100-5,000 parts, market tests and bridge quantities while a production tool is being built.
Soft steel (P20) rapid tooling extends the range to 50,000-100,000+ shots and handles hotter materials and tighter tolerances. The rule of thumb: if you are confident the design is final and the volume will grow, spend the incremental money on P20; if the design may still change, aluminum is the cheaper bet because re-cutting aluminum is fast and inexpensive. What You Get From a Rapid Tooling Run
A rapid tooling run is a real molding program, not a sample service. You get molded parts in production-grade resin, with the surface finish, draft and gate design validated; dimensional inspection on critical features; and process data that carries into the production tool. That validation value is often bigger than the parts themselves — a 500-piece rapid run that proves the wall thickness, the gate location and the fit in your assembly saves a re-cut of an expensive production tool.
