Injection molding cost has six real drivers, and most buyers negotiate on the wrong one. The price of a molded part is not primarily the resin — it is the tooling strategy, the cycle time, the tolerance demands, the material grade, the finishing requirements and the quantity. Understand which levers actually move the number, and you can cut 20-40% of the cost without asking for a single discount.

The Six Levers, Ranked by Impact

Tooling strategy is the biggest lever. A single-cavity aluminum rapid tool costs a fraction of a 4-cavity hardened steel production tool — and for a 5,000-piece program, the production tool never pays back. Matching the cavity count and steel grade to the true volume curve is the single largest saving available. Quantity is the second lever because it decides the first.

Cycle time is the third lever and the one most buyers never see. A 45-second cycle at $30/hour machine rate costs about $0.38 per part in machine time alone; cut the cycle to 30 seconds and the machine cost drops to $0.25. Cycle time is decided by wall thickness (thinner cools faster), material (crystalline resins cool slower and need longer), and cooling-channel design. Tolerance is the fourth lever. Every ±0.01 mm beyond standard adds process control, inspection time and scrap. Mark only the true functional dimensions. Material is the fifth — a switch from PC to PC/ABS, or from unfilled nylon to 30% glass-filled, changes both resin price and cycle time. Finishing is the sixth: SPI A-1 polish, painting, plating or pad printing each add real cost and should be specified only where the market demands them.

Hidden Costs: The Quote That Bites Later

Three hidden costs blow up budgets after the quote. Second, inspection and documentation: PPAP, full CMM reports and material traceability have a cost; agree the level at the start.
