Automotive Parts Manufacturer: What OEMs Should Verify Before Sourcing

Automotive parts manufacturing is the most audit-heavy segment of injection molding. The parts are safety-relevant or cosmetically critical, the volumes are high, the tolerances are documented in PPAP, and the supplier is expected to hold process capability (Cpk ≥ 1.33) on every critical feature for the life of the program. An automotive supplier that cannot produce an APQP package on request is not an automotive supplier.

IATF 16949 and the PPAP Deliverable Set

Automotive quality starts with IATF 16949 and its customer-specific requirements. For every production program we deliver a PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) package: the design records, the DFMEA/PFMEA, the control plan, the process flow, the material certificates, the dimensional results, the capability studies (Cpk on critical dimensions), and the appearance approval report (AAR) for cosmetic parts. The PPAP is not paperwork for its own sake — it is the evidence that the process will hold the specification, and it is the first thing a customer auditor asks to see.

Capability is measured, not promised. We run SPC on the critical features during the process qualification, and we hold Cpk ≥ 1.33 as the standard for safety-relevant dimensions. On mature programs the numbers get better: comparable two-color automotive programs in the market report rejection rates below 0.8% with parts tolerance of ±0.1 mm and mold tolerance of ±0.05 mm (firstmold.com case study).

Interior, Exterior and the Materials That Go With Them

Interior parts face the occupants: armrest bases, console structures, speaker grilles, air-vent components — mostly PP compounds, ABS, PC/ABS and TPE overmolds, with UV stability and 105°C heat resistance in the spec. Exterior parts face the weather: bumper brackets, mirror housings, light housings — PC, PBT, ASA and PA66, with weathering tests and paint or film finishes. Functional parts under the hood face temperature and chemical loads: PPS, PA66-GF30, PBT and PEEK for connectors and valve bodies.

Each material family has its processing reality: glass-filled nylons need drying below 0.2% moisture and hot molds (80-100°C); PPS runs at 320-340°C barrel temperatures with special screw design. Our DFM team selects the grade against the part's thermal, mechanical and chemical requirements — and tells you when a cheaper grade will not survive the test. The other half of automotive sourcing is supply-chain continuity. Programs run for years, and the supplier's stability becomes part of the part: a factory that cannot hold capacity, cannot manage raw-material sourcing or cannot produce the PPAP evidence on demand is a production risk regardless of part quality.
